Bradbury Mountain State Park

A perfect Maine state park for a fun weekend of family camping.

Maine is a wonderful state to enjoy the great outdoors and one of the best activities to do with your family is camping. If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy some quality time with the family, Bradbury Mountain State Park is the perfect destination. Located in Pownal, Maine, this mountain park has a rich history that dates back to the 1800’s. Some of the first settlers of the state called Bradbury Mountain home and established a vineyard that can still be seen to this day. The mountain was also used to raise sheep, cattle and pigs which helped to feed Maine’s first European settlers. For many years these settlers called the mountain home and raised their families off the bounty of the land.

Bradbury Mountain State Park was purchased in 1939 by the federal government and was dedicated as one of Maine’s first state parks. Later in 1990, a local family gave the park an additional 250 acres which now brings the park to 800 acres. This very spacious park is the perfect place for those looking for great Maine hiking, and visitors of the park can enjoy miles of wooded trails. Mountain biking is another great activity that many enjoy doing and would make a great family day out. There are many different types of wildlife that call Bradbury Mountain State Park home and visitors often get the chance to take pictures of them. But remember to give animals lots of space and never try to feed them.

For those who wish to enjoy some family camping, the park has many campsites available for rent and is also very affordable. Other actives that families can enjoy together include bird watching, cross-country skiing snowmobiling  in the winter, horseback riding, and wildlife watching. Bradbury Mountain State Park is a great place to visit in both summer and winter because there is always something to enjoy here. Visitors of the park can take advantage of the many facilities here including a playground for the kids, refreshing showers, multiple picnic areas to enjoy lunch with the family, and a campground that offers some of the best Maine state park camping in the area.

Whether you are looking for a Maine Day trip with the family or you want to spend an entire week camping out under the stars, Bradbury Mountain State Park is the perfect place. This heavily wooded park is a great place to go back in time and see how Maine looked before it was developed. So if you are in the area and want to enjoy an amazing time out in the woods, why not stop by Bradbury Mountain State Park and take a hike? The park is open for day use from 9:00 AM until sunset and visitors can access the park by paying a small fee at the entrance. For those who wish to spend the night in the park, campground reservations can be made either on-line or by calling the park office.
